Why We Love the Delaware Beaches in the Winter

As Southern Delawareans, we love to hit the beach all year long. Sure, summer is the most popular season. But there’s just something extra special about the Delaware beaches in the winter that we can’t get enough of. Here’s why…

Holiday Cheer

During December, Southern Delaware turns into a winter wonderland filled with twinkling Christmas lights and visits from Santa. Seeing our small towns filled with sparkling lights, like Downtown Milford, is one of the things we love most about Delaware in the winter.

Fewer Crowds

Of course, we love the excitement of hitting the beach from Memorial Day to Labor Day with everyone else, but there’s just something special about being one of the only ones on the beach. So go ahead: pick the best spot, find the perfect sea shell and take one of those rare beach photos without any photo bombers.

Dog Friendly

Delaware beaches have fewer pet regulations in the off-season. Like in Lewes, from September 30- May 1, dogs are allowed on the beach without time restrictions. We sponsor Delaware SPCA’s Bark on the Boards, which is the official “opening” to the dogs for access to the beaches after the close of the summer season. This is your dog’s chance to run free on the beach and play fetch in the surf, and we think he’ll love it!

Tax-Free Shopping

There’s no sales tax in Delaware, making Delaware beaches the perfect destination for tax-free holiday shopping. Events likeWeekend Wonderland in Bethanycombine tax-free holiday shopping with caroling, cocoa and classic Christmas movies.
